BIOMONITORING

Environmental Quality Monitoring Using Bees

Sampling and analyzing bees and/or bee wax allows us to detect the presence of :

  • Pesticides

  • Heavy Metals

  • Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)

  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

  • Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)

  • Dioxins / Furans

Biomarkers

We analyze protein oxidation levels in bees, which reflect environmental stress.

Particles

We quantify the particles found on the bees’ backs and describe their atomic composition using a scanning electron microscope.

STEP 1: Installation of Bioindicator Hives

TECMALAB proposes the installation of hives on company or public institution premises. These hives allow environmental monitoring through bee sampling and/or remote hive tracking with data logging.

STEP 2: Sampling, Analysis, Interpretation & Results

Based on the contaminants to be studied, sampling is conducted from the hives installed on-site. Analysis is then performed, followed by the delivery of the results.

STEP 3: Corporate Social Responsibility

TECMALAB conducts talks and activities for all types of audiences to raise awareness about the importance of bees.

We also create editorial content for internal corporate magazines and for public outreach.

STEP 4: Integration of Results into Sustainable Development Plans

The actions taken through this initiative can be integrated into the company’s sustainable development strategies (ISO 14001, ISO 26000, Agenda 21, CSR, etc.).

This method serves as an environmental indicator that can be incorporated into ISO standards.
